The 1715 Siege of Sinj Play

16.08.2017.

Although the 302nd Alka festivities have just ended, our town does not stay still.

Once again we have the opportunity to enjoy the historical spectacle The 1715 Siege of Sinj organized by the Sinj Tourist Board.

The events that preceded the miraculous victory over the Ottomans, the victory which would forever leave a mark on Croatian history and result in the founding of the chivalry Alka game, will be staged at two main Sinj squares – act one on the King Tomislav Square (Pijaca) and act two on Dr Franjo Tuđman Square.

Act one begins with the violent and dramatic attack of the Ottomans who manage to conquer Sinj Town (Varoš), burning the church in the process and taking the people into slavery. The leader of the Ottomans, Mustafa-paša Čelić, triumphantly passes by in his chariot as he arrogantly announces the easy conquest of Sinj fort, where the people hid, alongside a small number of defenders and their most prized possession from Rama – the picture of the Mother of Mercy, the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj.

In act two the Defence Council, despite an almost dead-end situation, do not even think of surrendering, but instead decide to defend their town, outnumbered by a powerful enemy. According to legend, the Ottomans were defeated and Sinj was liberated thanks to the help of the Madonna.

The author of the script is Prof Velimir Borković, and the play is directed by Rade Perković. The members of the Community Theatre Sinj, Association of rera singers and gusle players of Otok, the Sinj majorettes, KUD Sinj, Klis Uskoks historical troop, cavalrymen of the Alka Society, and horses of the Alka stables all participate in the play, while Mr. Davor Ivković and Mr. Ivica Kurobasa tend to the carriage.
